Dominican Republic Santo Domingo

The nation´s capital and one of the Caribbean´s most historic cities. The historic old town is one of the most impressive places to visit in the Americas. Other sights include the Columbus Lighthouse the Cathedral of Santa Maria La Menor (the Americas´ oldest cathedral), the Alcazar of Columbus, the National Botanical Gardens, and the National Zoo.
The average temperature varies little in the city, because the tropical tradewinds help mitigate the heat and humidity throughout the year. December and January are the coolest months and July and August are the warmest. Santo Domingo and the rest of the country are in the Caribbean and have a tropical climate, which makes them very vulnerable to hurricanes.

The historic Old town

The Dominican Republic is a wonderful mix of history coupled with a unique Caribbean environment. The Old Town section of Santo Domingo reminds one of old sections of some of Spain´s most beautiful cities. The people are a perfect blend of Spanish, African and Caribbean heritage.
Exploring Santo Domingo´s ancient streets and architecture is well worthy of a day.

The Alcazar of Columbus

A castle built around 1500 by Columbus´ son Diego, now houses a fabulous museum offering a collection of period furniture, artwork and jewelry. Taking a walk through much of the old Santo Domingo is like being back in the Mid-16th century.

The whole island is a architectural spectacle.

Santa Maria la Menor

Visit the first cathedral in America, `Santa Maria la Menor´. Constructed in 1514, this is where Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass during his two visits to the Dominican Republic. It is a marvelous example of colonial architecture with 14 chapels, seven on each side of the main alter. The Cathedral is also famous as the resting place for Christopher Columbus´remains for many years before they were moved to the new `Columbus Lighthouse´. There has been a continuing dispute between Santo Domingo and Seville, Spain as to who has the actual remains of Columbus. They are currently conducting DNA tests with the descendants of Columbus to determine who has the true remains.
